Act of granting credits to any organization or individual is known as accreditation. When an institution or organization is accredited that means that organization meets the rock-bottom standards of the profession or education. In India, the accreditation to the hospitals and health-care organizations is provided by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) which is a constituent board Quality Council of India and was established in 2005. NABH has designed stringent objective elements for the hospitals to get accreditation. The main purpose of the accreditation is the quality care of the patient and the whole process of NABH revolves around the patient. However, the objective elements are patient related and organization related and aim to streamline the entire operation and governance in the hospital. The first hospital accredited in India in 2006 was Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences, Kerala, which was a 650-bedded multispecialty hospital. NABH accreditation for AYUSH hospitals began in 2009.

NABH is an internationally accredited organization by the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua). Hence, the hospitals accredited by NABH automatically have international recognition. This provides boost to medical tourism in country. NABH is an institutional member as well as a member of the Accreditation Council of the ISQua. NABH is one of the founder members of the Asian Society for Quality in Healthcare. There has been demand from SAARC/ASIAN countries for NABH accreditation and to meet this requirement, NABH has launched NABH International and to begin with the Philippines is the first overseas destination for extending NABH accreditation services.

Ayurveda now is being recognized and practiced worldwide and expectations from Ayurveda have increased manifold particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it is obligatory that the standards of Ayurvedic hospitals should be so high that these should be acceptable to the international society. Accreditation definitely improves the satisfaction index of the patients, staff working over there, and of management as well. NABH has started the accreditation program of AYUSH hospitals in close association with the Ministry of AYUSH. Any applicant AYUSH hospital has to start its journey of accreditation with the submission of application and required fees to NABH and has to pass through the rigorous process of preassessment (optional) and final assessment on the basis of the manuals. That assessment report of the assessors is reviewed by the committee at NABH headquarter and if approved, then certificate of accreditation is given to the hospital. Then, the same process is recycled for every time to renew the accreditation.

The National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, a Deemed to be University is the biggest hospital of Ayurveda which has got NABH accreditation in September 2017. After accreditation of the hospital, it was felt that tremendous refinement in the hospital functioning and outcome has taken place. The patient satisfaction index has improved, the quality of care and safety of the patient has gone quite high, lot of infrastructural improvements could be done, many statutory requirements were fulfilled, and lot of trainings to the staff were done. This changed the whole scenario of the hospital and made a lot of positive difference in the mindset of the workers and administration. The feedback mechanism so developed is giving lot of opportunities of making corrections in the running hospital system and continuous improvement is going on. So, it is highly advisable that all the Ayurveda hospitals in the country should strive for NABH accreditation. This will result into the better confidence in the mind of public and will increase the average footfall in the patients.
